LOGAN, UT: William (Bill) Lyman Rich, 76, passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 from pneumonia, a complication from lung cancer.
Bill was born July 12, 1936, the fifth child of Lyman H. and Ada S. Rich. He graduated from Logan High School where he loved playing on the tennis team. He served an LDS Mission in London, England from 1956-1958. He graduated from Utah State University. While at Utah State, he met and married Carol Woolley on July 20, 1960 in the Cardston, Alberta Temple. Shortly after they were married they were stationed in Germany with the Army and remained there until 1962. After returning to the US, Bill started his insurance agency with State Farm and successfully ran that for 34 years retiring in 1999. He was recognized professionally for being a top salesman and enjoyed earning sales incentive trips that helped him travel the world. He was also successful in developing, building, and leasing apartments and commercial buildings.
Despite the success he enjoyed in business, Bill would tell you that the accomplishment he was most proud of was raising eight children. He supported his children, and now grandchildren, in their sports, musical, and school endeavors. He loved to build people up and was positive almost to a fault.
Bill was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions including Bishop, Stake President, Ward Mission Leader, and Temple Ordinance Worker. It didn’t matter what calling he served in, he gave it his full effort. Bill and Carol also enjoyed serving a mission together in Charlotte, NC from 2004-2005.
Bill was known for many things including traveling, taking one more “group shot” with his rubber banded camera, chatting with a friend or stranger (didn’t matter), playing tennis, skiing, rooting for the Aggies, sitting on the front row of a musical, and getting things done. In three words: Bill loved life!
Bill is survived by his wife Carol; his eight children: Diane (Mark) Weese of River Heights, Lori (Burke) Plummer of Draper, Todd (Karrie) Rich of Fruit Heights, Scott (Amy) Rich of Riverton, Robert (Aki) Rich of Farmington, Julie (Greg) Ashcroft of St. George, Michael (Emily) Rich of Meridian, Idaho, Brad (Ashley) Rich of Farmington; 27 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren; sisters Marilyn (Reed) Mickelson and Cleone (Reed) Frischknecht. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Morris Rich, and sister, Joyce Nelson.
A celebration of his life will be held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 in the River Heights Stake Center at 800 S 600 E in River Heights. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St. in Logan and from 10:00 to11:30 a.m. at the church prior to the services.
