William Frank Campbell, aged 82, passed away 23 October 2010.
Bill grew up farming in Southern Illinois and served in the US Navy from 1948-1952. He met his wife, Phyllis, while home on leave. They married in 1954 and had 4 children. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from University of Illinois, and his PhD from Michigan State University. For 32 years he was a professor in the College of Agriculture at Utah State University where he received many awards including: Distinguished Professor of the College of Agriculture, Faculty Library award, and Outstanding Graduate Mentor award. He also received the Outstanding Graduate Educator award from the American Society for Horticultural Science. He was an active member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, serving a term as President of the Pacific Coast division. He was passionate about education, science in particular, and guided the research endeavors of many graduate and undergraduate students. He was active in USU Emeriti and the Logan First Presbyterian Church.
During retirement, Bill and Phyllis travelled to many countries and made sure the grandchildren had enough Aggie ice cream to eat.
He is survived by Phyllis, his children Julia (Jim), David (Cindy), Kelly, Kirsten (Dave), one sister, Lela (Harley) Ramsey, 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. His parents and 2 sisters preceded him in death.
The family invites all to services this Friday, 29 October, at 1:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 12 South 2nd West, Logan, UT; and to visitation at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan, UT on Thursday, 28 October, 6:00-8:00 pm. Interment will be in Logan City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers a donation to the Department of Plant, Soils, and Climate, USU College of Agriculture, 4800 Old Main Hill, Logan, UT 84322-4800, or a contribution to the William F. and Phyllis M. Campbell Scholarship Endowment through the Women’s Center for Lifelong Learning, Taggart Student Center, USU, Logan, UT.
