WILLIAM G. RADCLIFFE
LOGAN, UTAH: William Gladstone Radcliffe of Logan,Utah, slipped from life peacefully on Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah. He was 92
years old. His passing has left a gaping void in the lives of those who knew him, but his loved ones know he left this world content, with no relationship untended, having lived life to its fullest with the knowledge that he had guided many with his loyal devotion as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, coach, neighbor, and friend.
Bill was born Sep 7, 1918, in Los Angeles, CA. He grew up in Oakland, CA, attending Oakland Technical High School. On February 14, 1944, he married Leah Maughan of Wellsville, Utah.
Bill served in World War II in the U.S. Army 1941-1942 and the U.S. Army Air Corps 1943-45, where he was a B-17 pilot and flight instructor. After his honorable discharge, Bill was a Berkeley Police Officer 1946-1973, where he was a Patrolman and a Warrant Officer. Bill and Leah lived and raised their family in Berkeley and Albany, CA.
Bill was active in the LDS church, serving as Scoutmaster and coaching basketball and softball. He was especially well loved for leading teens on Sierra hikes every summer and for being the resident handyman at Camp Liahona. Bill enjoyed the outdoors, including fishing, hunting, and backpacking. He renovated a cabin on the Russian River, where his family spent their summers. When their daughter worked overseas, Bill and Leah visited her in Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, Italy, and France. Later in life, he was interested in geology and coin collecting, generously sharing geodes and coins with friends young and old.
Bill and Leah moved to Logan, Utah, in 1991, where they found their "dream house" and spent happy years tending their garden, hosting neighborhood giant pumpkin-growing contests, exploring the national parks, and feeding ducks and birds in their backyard.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, David Radcliffe and Katherine Nienberg Radcliffe; his stepfather, Harry M. Hall; his brother, Harold Radcliffe; and his sister, Charlotte Fisk.
The memory of Bill's sparkling blue eyes and generous heart will live on forever for all that survive him, including his wife of 67 years, Leah (Logan, UT); daughter, Katherine Radcliffe (Santa Rosa, CA); son, Mike Radcliffe (Pinole, CA); daughter-in-law, Linda Board Radcliffe; grandson, James Radcliffe (Seattle, W A); and granddaughter, Kelli Radcliffe Dugranrut (Fair Oaks, CA).
