SMITHFIELD, UTAH: William Peter Camp, 80, of Smithfield, Utah died peacefully at his home Sunday, March 25th, 2007.
He was born December 25, 1926 in Malad, Idaho to Alvin and Margaret Camp.
He was the fifth of seven children. On July 14, 1951, he married Marilyn Larsen in Las Vegas, NV. He and Marilyn are the parents of five children. They are Leslie Drew of Carmel Valley, CA, Annette Camp of Santa Barbara, CA, Joseph Camp of Big Sur, CA, Denene Moats of Weirsdale, FL, and Douglas Camp of Dallas, TX. He is the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
In 1943, at the age of 17, Pete joined the US Navy and rose through the ranks to Lieutenant Commander. He traveled the world and has always remained proud of his military service. He returned to Malad to graduate from Malad High. The family moved around the country before settling in Las Vegas where Pete retired in 1972. He went to work as a carpenter, building cabinets and other beautiful objects for homes in the area. Pete also earned his Associates Degree while in Las Vegas.
In 1989 Pete retired once again and he and Marilyn sold the home in Las Vegas and toured the country in a trailer for the next seven years, allowing them to spend valuable time with each of their children around the country. No one was a stranger to Pete, only a friend he hadn't met yet. He and Marilyn continued to keep in touch with people they met from around the world. He was a huge history buff and enjoyed geneology.
In 1996 they tired of the travel and settled in Smithfield near where they both spent their youth. Pete took up his carpentry as a hobby and many family and friends received the benefits. Pete was known for his friendly spirit and his sense of humor. He could remember and recite poetry, facts and jokes and you were never sure when the story started, which one you were going to end up with. He could get away with things others were not, but everyone who met him came away better for having met Pete. Even when his health began to fail him, he would always make light of it by seldom complaining and always reporting that he was "4-0".
The fact he was born on Christmas, died near Easter and worked as a carpenter was not coincidence. Pete loved unconditionally. There was nothing you could ask for from Pete and not receive willingly. He served in his own way and inspired others.
He is survived by his wife of Smithfield, his children, grandchildren, and great~ grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters LaRue Jones of Ogden, Carma Morgan of Moscow, Ill, and Melba Hedstrom of Las Vegas, NV, as well as extended family who
will miss him dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Anne Christofferson and Neith Mabes and his brother Marion Camp.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 29th, 2007 at 1 :00 p.m. at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan. A viewing will be held from 11 :00 to 12:30 prior to the service.
